This is one of the panels I had to redo entirely because I had accidentally merged the original at once point…
That loose strand for Remiel’s hair is basically a permanent design change at this point. I also had him drop his gun to justify it not appearing in further panels.
Qi’nya is probably the most difficult character to draw (though it feels like whoever I’m drawing at any given time is hardest). I’ve always picture him as having a fox face (like Gin from Bleach or Mitsune from Love Hina), but the slanted eyes are surprisingly difficult, and I’m not committed to drawing them closed. I also wanted to give hive a more aquiline nose, but I never really had the confidence for it.
I mirrored the middle panel for some consistency in which hand was holding the hair pins.
This page would have been done sooner, but before I could finish the last panel I ended up having to work on my illustration for a Mother’s Day card and so it ended up being delayed.
I kept telling myself over and over that I was only going to touch up the artwork, but for whatever reason I ended up basically re-drawing this entire page.
This and an earlier page where everyone’s faces got all creepy were meant to hint at the nature of the Atra’novalis. I don’t know if I really managed to convey the effect the way I wanted it, so it might be confusing to some people…? I won’t bother explaining the details because it’ll pop up eventually in the story!
The original composition for this page was so bland, I tried to improve it a bit, I think it’s a bit more appealing anyway.
Halfway through chapter 1! I really like the improvements to this page, the change in the hair really makes it feel more dynamic and less flat.
One of the other reoccurring changes I made with was Thanatos’ hair. I slowly changed the shape of the bangs (intentional!) and his fringe just seems to get fluffier and fluffier (unintentional!)
I’m really pleased with out the middle panel came out, especially. He looks so much cuter.
